Karlaya’s Journey into Teaching

Career changers bring perspective, resilience, and real-world experience into the classroom – and AMP SCITT actively seeks to attract and support them. Karlaya Owolabi’s journey into teaching is a strong example of how professional experience, values-led decision-making, and high-quality school-based training come together to shape confident, reflective teachers who make an immediate impact.

Career changers bring perspective and real-world experience into the classroom. Karlaya Owolabi’s journey shows how AMP SCITT supports professionals to transition into teaching through high-quality, school-based training that delivers impact from day one.

From Estate Agency to Education

At 33, Karlaya brought extensive professional experience to her teacher training. After seven years in estate agency and a brief role in compliance, she volunteered as a Teaching Assistant at Kingsley Primary School in Toxteth. Working closely with pupils, including a young boy from Syria, sparked her passion for education and confirmed her decision to pursue teaching full-time.

Karlaya says: “Seeing children grow in confidence and knowing I can support them to reach their potential made me realise teaching was the path for me. Every day brings new challenges, and I love that I’m making a real difference.”

Why AMP SCITT?

Karlaya chose AMP SCITT for its structured, school-based training and supportive community. She valued the local placement opportunities and the diverse, inclusive environment. The thorough face-to-face interview reinforced her decision, offering insight into the programme and connecting her with other career changers.

Placement Experience: Holy Family Catholic Primary School

Her first placement was at Holy Family Catholic Primary School, serving a highly diverse community with many English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners. Karlaya gained insight into language acquisition and inclusion, which informs her Master’s-level research on effective strategies for EAL pupils. Building strong relationships with pupils and families, she strives to ensure every child feels represented and able to reach their potential.

Supporting Diversity

Diversity and inclusion have long been central to Karlaya’s values. Inspired by her mother’s work with refugees and asylum seekers, she helped AMP SCITT develop practical approaches to engage diverse communities. Partnerships with GraceHola and the Merseyside Refugee Support Network are already underway.
